Can you spare some time to help the people & communities of Kent ?

Over 10,000 people are reported missing in Kent each year.
Approximately 360 of these are classed as 'high risk'. In the most serious of cases, the Police will call for KSAR assistance. In 2013 KSAR were called out 72 times - nearly 1.5x every week. Kent Search & Rescue have over 100 operational members but we now desperately need more Support Members. These "KSAR Champions" help us by raising awareness and raising money. We are often asked to talk about our work or are given the opportunity to raise money at shows but operational requirments mean we cannot attend.

[Reference: Burglary detectives warn of 'absence checks' techn]
Burglary detectives are asking homeowners to be on their guard against a technique that burglars have been known to use to identify vulnerable properties.
In other parts of the country, reports have been received of stickers being placed on doors or letterboxes of houses advertising a locksmith service. The sticker has a telephone number on it, but the number is not a registered number. If the stickers are not removed, burglars presume that the house is empty or that the owners are away.
Placing the stickers also gives burglars the opportunity to 'scout out' the house, and look through windows but to be able to explain themselves as 'delivering advertising' if anyone were to stop them and ask questions.
Police officers recently cracked a similar case in Sevenoaks where the offender was leaving mud on doors to see if it was cleaned away. If it wasn't, the property was potentially empty and a good target. The offender was caught and sentenced to four years and eight months in prison.
Police are now asking that homeowners keep an eye out for - and to report - any suspicious activity to ensure that burglars are thwarted before they get a chance to strike. The advice comes as officers continue their crackdown on burglary as part of Operation Castle, which is a force wide initiative designed target burglary suspects in the winter months.

Bank card scams (and how to avoid them)

This is how they do it:

A fraudster telephones pretending to be the police or from your bank - they claim your bank account or card has been used fraudulently.
They tell you to hang up and call the police or bank back to ensure the call is genuine. They stay on the line so when you redial you think you are through to the police or your bank. But you’re not. They then tell you to give them your PIN number.
They send a taxi or courier to collect your card. With your card and PIN they can access your money.
Remember:
The police and banks will never ask for your PIN or bank card over the phone. So never give them to anyone.
If you think you have been a victim of this type of crime, call us on 101. Or if the incident is in progress, dial 999, using a different telephone if possible.
For more advice, visit our website: www.kent.police.uk
Fraudsters are trying to trick people into handing over their bank cards and revealing their PIN numbers. Don't be fooled.

                    AUGUST  SEPTEMBER  2013

[Reference: stolen vehicle scrap yards]
This is a message from Nhw in partnership with Kent Police.

Officers from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate are asking the people of Kent to keep an eagle eye out for suspicious activity involving the storage and disassembling of stolen vehicles. The appeal for vigilance comes just a month after SCD officers uncovered a possible stolen car and drugs ring at an industrial site in Horton Kirby, near Dartford.
Following reports of a stolen vehicle entering the area, detectives executed a warrant at the scrap yard on 10 July and seized parts from at least 40 vehicles, all suspected to have been stolen.
Further enquiries have led police to believe that the unit may have been used to break down stolen vehicles for parts as well as the production of drugs.
Investigations into the Horton Kirby scrap yard continue but officers have issued an appeal to Kent residents asking them to report suspicious activity which may indicate locations are possibly being used to store and disassemble stolen vehicles.
There are a number of factors which could indicate such criminal activity is taking place:

· Loud noises and the sound of metal grinding throughout the day and night.
· Large vehicles such as vans and HGVs making collections 24/7
· Vehicles, sometimes high-value, coming on to the site but never being seen again.
· Vehicles not belonging to the area being parked outside the premises.
· Fuel and tyres being stored on site.   Vehicles having their number plates changed.
Members of the public who believe they may have information on locations of this nature are urged to report it to Kent Police on 101 or Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

There have been reports recently of an Alarm / Security Company calling in our area and using various methods to try to get people to sign up. If you have received any such visits please phone the office to tell us what happened so that it can be passed on the Trading Standards.

[Reference: mobile police contact points]You may be aware that Kent Police has recently launched a fleet of mobile police contact points to enhance visibility of, and access to, the police particularly in rural areas.

The fleet of 6 mobile police contact point vehicles will visit 180 locations, mostly small and rural, on a significant and systematic basis. The fleet will be operational from Wednesday through to Sunday. Over 180 locations will receive a regular visit in each two week period. The locations will be subject to review but will be spread all across the County. In a sense, this service offers a form of 'engagement infrastructure' which other agencies may wish to work with. The vehicles will be progressively rolled out over the next few months and the full service is expected to be operating by October.

Crime falls for another consecutive year

Crime in Kent has reduced for a sixth year in a row. This is despite significant budget cuts and changes in national and local policing.

In the last financial year Kent Police achieved six of their 10 performance targets and exceeded eight performance targets. This includes 3,845 fewer victims of crime in the county and the number of people satisfied with the policing service reached an all time high.

Across the county violent crime, criminal damage and vehicle crime were all down, and many successes were due to closer working with partner agencies to catch and convict criminals.

Chair of Kent Police
Authority, Ann Barnes said: ‘I’m pleased with how the Force has been
performing. Despite having to cut £50m from its budget by 2015 Kent Police
continues to cut crime in the county. This is testament to the hard work of all
our officers and staff.’

[Reference: DY4694]   Community message.            Current Scams.

Two scams have been brought to my notice recently...

First E mails are being sent from persons saying they are from your Bank and that there is a problem. This problem varies from accounts to Passwords and all points in between. Your details are then requested. Do not give them. Contact your local branch and inform them what has happened.

Secondly phone calls telling you that you have a problem with your computer and that they will fix it for you over the phone. Again do not give any personal or bank details over the phone.
